10 Examine Critical Areas of Need

Within mental health care there exist a number of critical areas of need which remain of great concern to society, as well as to business and industry. The cost of substance abuse, for instance, has increased markedly across companies.

Using alcoholism as an illustration of one area of need, it can be noted that with the exception of very severe alcoholism, Allen and Mattson (1993) note no advantage to inpatient over outpatient treatment for alcoholism. What this finding suggests is that private practitioners with expertise in treating alcoholism on an outpatient basis may be of appeal to managed care groups, as well as to companies with substance abuse programs. In the current market, these practitioners might benefit from actively marketing this practice skill and expertise.

While it can be challenging to monitor emerging and critical areas of need, such arenas as domestic violence, forensic psychology, health and wellness, AIDS education, addictions, psychology and public health, child care, as well as such areas as program evaluation represent a sampling of arenas in which mental health professionals can remain viable and productive as we enter the 21st century.
